ACCUPLACER

What is the ACCUPLACER test?

The ACCUPLACER is a test to determine proficiency levels in Math, English, and Reading. Academic advisors and admissions’ counselors use the test results, along with transcripts, goals, and interests, to determine college course selection and placement. Student performance on the ACCUPLACER is evaluated in conjunction with the other assessments of the student’s academic readiness for university instruction.

Who takes the test?

Students may need to take the ACCUPLACER test if they:

  •   are a high school senior applying for fall term
  •   have a grade point average on the College Preparatory Curriculum that is below required level
  •   have a composite ACT score that does not reach the required level

In an effort to be proactive regarding the need to safeguard our university community, face-to-face ACCUPLACER testing will be suspended until further notice. Students who plan to attend DSU in the fall of 2024 may take the ACCUPLACER using Examity online proctoring service. The fee to test using Examity is $25.

Developmental Studies

Entering freshman admitted to DSU with scores of 16 or below on the ACT in reading and/or English subtests are required to enroll in corequisite courses in their deficient subject areas during their first semester. English and Math courses are credit-bearing, gateway courses that satisfy general education requirements and may include an additional one-credit hour lab. The Reading course is a non credit-bearing course.

Any ACT subtest score which is 16 or below in English and/or Reading and 19 or below in Math is considered deficient. Students admitted to DSU with two or more deficient ACT subtest area scores must also enroll in the year-long Academic Support classes, CED 098 in the fall and CED 099 in the spring. The curriculum for these classes includes instruction in goal setting, time management, study skills, and reading comprehension. Additional time is spent on career coaching, and any personal issues college freshmen may encounter. The program assists students with the transition to college-level work and equip them with the skills and tools necessary for the achievement of their academic, career, and life goals.

Summer Developmental Program

What is the summer developmental program?
  • 8-week academic program
  • provides faculty-directed and computer-assisted instructions in math, reading, and writing
  • academic support for learning strategies and study skills
  • academic coaching
  • personal and career coaching
Who is eligible for the program?

Students who do not meet regular DSU undergraduate admissions criteria are eligible to enroll in the Summer Developmental Program as an alternate route to the admission process. Students who successfully complete the program are eligible to continue their college education at any State of Mississippi Institute of Higher Learning university in the fall term.

When is the program?

June – July

How do I enroll in the program? When is the deadline?

Students interested in enrolling in the Summer Developmental Program should contact the Student Success center at 662-846-4887.

To hold the program at the DSU Campus, a minimum of 10 students must be registered by April 15, at 5pm.

Financial aid is limited for Mississippi high school graduates attending the Mississippi Summer Developmental Program. For more information on financial aid eligibility and the application process, click here.

What are study skills workshops?

Workshops provide the skills and tools necessary for achieving academic, career, and life goals. The workshops are conducted by DSU team members and provide motivation and aids for academic success.

Pivot Program

The Pivot Program offers the opportunity for current undergraduate DSU students to qualify for funds to be deposited directly to the student’s DSU account by volunteering in the Student Success Center for 6 hours per week during semester. Required weekly hours in the Student Success Center include:

  • Meet with Academic Counselor
  • Study in Academic Support Lab
  • Volunteer in Student Success Center
